Pre-Construction
Utility Line Project
Point Breeze, Pittsburgh, PA
11-06-23
On this job, we were commissioned to produce a pre construction video, documenting the condition of sidewalks, crosswalks, drains, manholes, utility structures and intersections found between a number of main roadways and residential streets in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Point Breeze neighborhood.
We completed the job with a two-person crew, taking care to present every conceivable view of the specified survey error, unobscured by the parked vehicles that lined the mainly residential roadway. This required filming from both our well-marked construction vehicle as well as handheld and gimbal supported closeups on foot.
For vehicle-recorded video, it’s always a two-person job. One crewmember is responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle (keeping speeds at 10 mph or less for maximum safety) and the other for operating the external camera and systems. Handheld or stabilizer-supported pre construction video is recorded by one or multiple crewmembers, in this case both videographers on the assigned job. Each crewmember is wired with a professional microphone so that they can narrate their visual findings in real time. This includes cracks, uneven concrete or pavement, personal property (particularly tilted, leaning or otherwise damaged structures just off the project pathway) utility poles and wires, drainage structures and pedestrian crossings. Of course, every single one of these details is crucial to a project manager who will ultimately outline the parameters of the construction phase of the project.
We did not record aerial video of this particular job but we have two FAA-licensed drone pilots on staff to do so when required. Additionally, each member of our team is OSHA-10 certified. Safety FIRST. We’re so serious about safety that not only do we prioritize it in our own endeavors but we routinely assist with the production of Training and Safety Orientation Videos for many of our clients.
We use the most up to date and cutting-edge video and audio recording equipment to ensure the quality of footage recorded. As mentioned, we provide multiple perspectives of the project pathway. Vehicle recorded right and left shoulder passes, as well as handheld passes of streets obscured by vehicles or other structures both manmade and natural.
In the days leading up to a job, we like to keep an eye on the weather to make sure our video survey is as accurate as possible. Good lighting and low to no precipitation make that more achievable. On the day of, we like to contact the project manager to double check that all relevant footage on the pathway is visualized accurately. Once we return to our editing studio, we complete the project by checking the project info for accuracy of date recorded, direction of travel, geographic location and other invaluable data. After completion, the project coordinator receives both a digital and hard copy, via USB drive, of the finished product.
